To all who really miss their kayaking I thought that one of these might resonate....
The other might give a smile....substitute tallship for long kayak.....

Sea Fever
BY JOHN MASEFIELD
I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

+

I must go down to the sea again,
to the lonely sea and the sky;
I left my shoes and socks there -
I wonder if they're dry?

I named my my most decrepit kayak after Mr Longfellows 'The Wreck of the Hesperus'

I am also reminded of that other classic - The good ship Venus [go research that one yourself :laugh: ]

Good man Michael,
Ye Gods, I had not come across that one before,'The Wreck of the Hesperus'
what a fabulous piece of work, it weaves a story wonderfully and the language and words are just super....they describe what the water does so accurately.....and speak of the arrogance of man,in this case the Captain, arrogance often seen in men in exalted positions, but unfortunately exalted positions are not necessarily proof of any knowledge or education, they are merely titles....as shown in this poem...
They say (for those who wonder, they, are people who study such matters and I in turn study them) they say that when you appreciate poetry that you have "arrived" at a different place at least Psychologically, a more shall we say, serene and also understanding place, delighted to see others in the same boat, (no pun intended)

As for the Good ship Venus, I doth remember it very well, not for the faint hearted or the delicate of dispositions ears, but great fun in an irreverent way...the Captain in that one was quite a different character, most likely psychotic ...... :woohoo: :woohoo: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:
